Touch screen technology for mobile devices is going through a period of renaissance due in large part to the fascination surrounding iconic mobile phones such as Apple’s iPhone and Samsung’s Instinct, which have brought touch to a new level of user acceptance. Apple iPhone’s touch-screen interface, one that reacts to even the minute finger touches, is one of the main attractions of the phone that transformed the public’s idea of how a mobile handset should work. The iPhone’s capacitive type touch-screen was different from the normal resistive touch screens activated by physical force that had been around for years: it was activated by a finger’s electrical charge.

The great appeal of this interface led many in the industry to conclude that they had seen the future of most mobile handset displays. However, according to ABI Research director Kevin Burden, capacitive touch-screen in not the future for most mobile phones.

“The reality is that existing operating systems, legacy applications, and regional aspirations make the change to capacitive screens for many devices very challenging.”

Applications written for some of the high-end operating systems powering Smartphones such as Windows Mobile and Symbian do not lend themselves to capacitive navigation as there is a long legacy of third-party applications designed for five-way navigation, keypad, or stylus touch input. A change to capacitive screens would make it difficult to ensure continuity and backward compatibility.

Cost is also a major issue as resistive screens are far less expensive than capacitive.

The most important single factor, according to Burden, that supports the continued use of resistive screens is the huge opportunity in the Asian market and its need for screens that support handwriting recognition input with a stylus. A capacitive screen or QWERTY keyboard just will not suffice in markets like China, given the nature of its alphabet.

“Capacitive screens will continue to make inroads into high-end models,” concludes Burden, “but with the overall market volume still primarily in midrange devices, the resistive screens in devices in this tier will continue to keep resistive technology far ahead of capacitive.”

ABI Research has published a new study “Touch Screens in Mobile Devices” that examines the various touch screen technologies suited for the various mobile device form factors and sizes and forecasts the penetration of resistive, capacitive and other competing touch screen technologies in mobile phones, PDAs, PNDs, UMPCs, MIDs and Tablet PCs.

The study concludes that driven by a number of trends including the growing desire for more intuitive interfaces and personalization options as device functionality increases, as well as decreasing ASPs for touch components and panels, the penetration of touch screens in mobile devices will continue to increase, however, at different rates depending on the geographic region.

The recent study that forms part of two ABI Research Services, Mobile Devices and Location Aware Services, is essential for mobile hardware vendors: handset manufacturers, consumer electronic vendors, portable computer makers; touch-screen sensor, module and panel manufacturers; mobile operators; mobile platform and software vendors and content service providers.

Nokia N97 marks evolutionary milestone for Nseries and mobilekind

Nokia recently unveiled, on December 02, its latest Smartphone from the N-series range, the N97 at Nokia World 2008 in Barcelona. Nokia claims that N97 “isn’t a device that will trigger knee-jerk hysteria, but instead it should breed cool-headed excitement at the prospect of a new era of mobile experience”.

It may be an Nseries handset, but the N97 carves a new space in the otherwise blurred realm between smartphone and laptop - a product built on a foundation of rock solid mobile principles, Nokia innovations, and tangible new technologies, pushed to the extreme and embodied in a slimline pocket shell.

Upcoming Nokia N97

Just as the original N95 re-shaped our perceptions of what’s possible with a mobile device, the N97 again raises the bar beyond the reach of its peers by equipping us with a product that fuses the best proven Nokia hardware, software and Internet services, blended with a new flavour of design, ergonomics and usability.

The most physically immediate stand-out feature of the N97 is its kick-out full QWERTY keyboard, hidden behind a 3.5-inch widescreen 16:9 touch display that tilts smartly above the keys. The benefit being that you’ll be able to tap into local services with ease and share your social location with friends minus any extra fiddling or fuss.

Other key talents include a 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss Tessar lens and dual LED flash, GPS, HSDPA, Wi-Fi, USB 2.0, stereo Bluetooth and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The latest in Nokia’s XpressMusic range, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic delivers an affordable music device with a touch screen interface to the mass market.

Aiming to put music into the hands of millions, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic offers all the music essentials including a graphic equalizer, 8GB memory for up to 6000 tracks, support for all main digital music formats, and a 3.5mm jack. Built-in surround sound stereo speakers offer the industry’s most powerful sound.

The Media Bar also offers a direct link to the Web and to online sharing. Because the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic supports Flash content, individuals can surf the entire web.

The innovative ‘Contacts Bar’ lets people highlight four favorite contacts on their home-screen and, through a single touch, track a digital history of recent text messages, emails, phone logs, photos and blog updates.

For the best screen resolution available on a mobile phone, the 3.2-inch widescreen display brings photos, video clips and web content to life in vibrant color and true clarity. With a 16 by 9 aspect ratio and 30 frames-per-second playback and recording, the device is ideal for VGA quality video recording and playback. The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic also features a 3.2 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens and, with a single touch, images or videos can be shared via a favorite online community, such as Share on Ovi, Flickr, or Facebook.

Ensuring a seamless music experience, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic also provides easy access to browse and purchase tracks from the Nokia Music Store, where applicable, while the newly updated Nokia Music PC software allows for easy drag-and-drop transfer of songs and management of any music collection.

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic supports 60 languages worldwide and offers a variety of input methods including a virtual alphanumeric keypad, a virtual computer-style QWERTY keyboard, a pen stylus — and for true music enthusiasts, a plectrum — are all available.
