Whrrl and Maponics Partner to Offer Local Search and Mapping

Seattle, US-based Pelago, Inc., the makers of Whrrl, has announced a partnership with Maponics for Neighborhood Boundaries to power their location data needs. Whrrl is a leading location-aware, mobile social networking service that allows friends to share their experiences in real time. Pelago, Inc. is an early-stage company developing a new generation of consumer experiences based on breakthrough technology, including Whrrl, a new mobile and web-based service at the intersection of social networking and local discovery.

“Our social-savvy users expect Whrrl to have the most relevant, detailed information at the neighborhood level to help them find cool nearby places and activities,” said Alison Algor, Director of Customer Experience for Pelago. “Maponics is the perfect partner to help meet their expectations.”

Pelago was founded by former senior executives from Amazon.com and is backed by leading venture capital firms from the U.S., Europe and India.

As part of the agreement, Maponics Neighborhood Boundaries will power Whrrl with over 50,000 targeted neighborhoods in 2,000 cities across the U.S. and Canada. The service provides both large scale, major area neighborhoods (commonly known local neighborhoods), and smaller sub-neighborhoods for narrower searches, giving Whrrl users a choice between a high-level or more granular local views.

The Norwich, Vermont-based Maponics specializes in location-based data for businesses, including neighborhood, ZIP Code and carrier route boundaries. Local search, real estate, mobile, social media and marketing firms rely on Maponics to power hyper-local interactive search, mapping, and ad targeting platforms, including Zvents, infoUSA, Dominion Enterprises (eNeighborhoods and Homes.com), Smarter Agent, HelloMetro, Roost, CitySquares and many others. The Maponics Online Store, powered by Maponics data, is the only place USPS.com refers to for postal maps.
